Road-tripping in Europe this summer? Before you head out on the road, it might be an idea to wise up on some of the continent’s most confusing road signs. After 20,000 people were killed on Europe’s roads last year, the EU is enhancing safety for drivers – but the unusual signage could actually lead to a few bumps in the road.

Failure to abide by road signs in France, for example, can lead to a fine of €135, 4 points on your license, and even suspension. Recently tourists were urged to brush up on France’s very specific traffic laws to avoid fines of up to €1,500. In Germany, fines can go up to €300 for unsafe passing. In extreme cases, ignoring road signs can even lead to imprisonment. Helpfully, car rental company StressFreeRental.com compiled a list of 13 confusing road traffic signs in Europe to ensure your road trip remains as stress-free as possible – and some of them are pretty bizarre. Here are some of the most confusing – and funny – road signs in Europe.

Although it looks more like a trumpet, this is actually a Spanish sign banning the use of honking.

No, officially speaking, this one is not a ban on cars catching alight (although fingers crossed this is avoided). This French road sign is a warning to steer clear should your vehicle contain any dangerous loads.

This sign means no hand carts or wheelbarrows are allowed – so don’t forget to leave yours at home.

You’ll see this sign in areas of Norway where moose like to hang out. Believe it or not, collisions with moose are a common occurrence in the country.

If you’re caught short in Germany and see this sign, hard luck: there’s absolutely no urinating or defecating in nature allowed. Better look out for a service station.
