HORSHAM TOWNSHIP, PA —The makeover of the intersection at Route 611 and West Moreland Avenue is taking its next step.

Horsham Township Council has authorized the solicitation of a bid for a traffic signal at the intersection across from the former Willow Grove Naval Air Station at the old Grandma’s Grotto property.

Township officials said the intersection will be reconstructed to eliminate "a hard angle to straighten it out" and make it a four-way stop in preparation for the road will connect one day once the township develops the military base.

Township Manager Bill Walker said the bids can be requested now that the township has received PennDOT approvals.

The old Grandma’s Grotto property was acquired in June 2021, utilities were decommissioned, and the building was demolished in January 2022.

An application for the project was finalized and submitted to PennDOT in late November 2022, and the Navy has approved and is finalizing an easement on Navy property to situate traffic light equipment.

Meanwhile, a resident addressed the council about other traffic light issues.

The man, who lives in Warrington and works for UPS, said that traffic signals at Route 611 and Maple Avenue (upper) and Dresher Road and Route 611, Dresher and Horsham, and Dresher and Gibraltar, are not working properly.

He said that the traffic signals cycle through periods when the lengths of green lights are extremely short and red lights are long late at night and in the early mornings.

"I should have all green lights," said the man who leaves for work at 2:30 a.m. each day and has worked for UPS for 36 years.

The man said he mentioned the traffic signals to the township before but never received calls back about the issue.

Township officials said they would look into the matter.
